All Divisional Commanders of the Trinidad and Tobago Police Service have been mandated to

attend a meeting at the Police Administration Building today to present security plans for Carnival 2011.

The meeting will be chaired by Deputy Police Commissioner Jack Ewatski, who is in charge of Crime and Operations in the police service.

Sources revealed that during Monday’s meeting the Divisional Commanders will make known to DCP Ewatski what anti crime measures they intend to put in place to ensure that Carnival Monday and Tuesday are kept incident-free.

Sources revealed, the Port-of-Spain CID will put in place additional manpower at City Gate, Port-of-Spain on Carnival Monday and Tuesday to search persons entering and leaving Port-of-Spain.

This measure is in keeping with the zero-tolerance against persons being armed with knives, ice picks and other weapons, especially on Carnival Monday morning during J’Ouvert celebrations.

Additionally, officers of the Port-of-Spain CID will mingle with masqueraders to provide security for them, and at the same time, to keep a close watch on suspicious persons intent on carrying out criminal activities.

Sources also pointed out that foot patrols will also be increased both on Carnival Monday and Tuesday, and areas such as Georgest, Charlotte St, and Piccadilly on the Greens will be manned round the clock by mobile patrols.

The general consensus for this year’s Carnival will be a zero-tolerance against persons armed with weapons.

In the Northern Division officers will have the assistance of soldiers to patrol streets in Tunapuna and Arima, while in the Eastern Division special emphasis will be placed on foot patrols. Central Division officers will also increase foot and mobile patrols, while in the Southern Division, soldiers will play a key role in providing support for the police out on patrols and searches of members of the public.

Helicopter patrols will also be carried out both on Carnival Monday and Tuesday, while the Mounted Branch will have horse patrols in Port-of-Spain, San Fernando, Tunapuna and Sangre Grande. The police will also carry out patrols in areas prone to break-ins, and special emphasis placed on keeping watch at built-up communities.

Police have called on members of the public to desist from wearing jewellry and walking around with large sums of cash on Carnival Monday and Tuesday, and they are also advised against using ATM machines late at night on the two days of revellery. They also cautioned against persons parking their vehicles in unlit areas.
